9 best beaches in Malta
Malta’s beaches are known to be some of the finest in the Mediterranean. You’ve got the choice of three idyllic islands, each with their own unique coastline. There’s mainland Malta to the south, Gozo in the north and the minute island of Comino sandwiched in between.
With everything from secluded coves popular with the locals to Blue Flag beaches that are lined with bars and restaurants, you’re sure to find your favourite.
Looking for sun-kissed shores? Here are nine of the best beaches in Malta.
- Blue Lagoon
- Golden Bay
- Xlendi Beach
- Ramla Bay
- Ghajn Tuffieha
- San Blas
- St Peter’s Pool
- Mellieha Beach
- Gnejna Bay
1. Blue Lagoon
One of Malta’s top swimming spots, the Blue Lagoon lies between Comino and the uninhabited isle of Cominotto. Its bright-white sand makes the azure water glisten unlike any other beach on the island. So much so that it’s been the setting for many TV programmes and blockbuster movies.
The crystal-clear water and natural caves make it an ideal place for snorkelling and scuba diving. It can get busy with tourists and locals though, so get down early to secure your sunbathing spot!
2. Golden Bay
On the north-western coast of the main island, Golden Bay is the perfect name for this sandy cove. It’s one of 12 Blue Flag beaches in Malta, so it’s no surprise that thousands of sun-worshippers head here each summer.
Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for hire and there’s a variety of beach huts selling cooling drinks and ice creams. Want to mingle with the locals? Head down at the weekend and get a barbecue going.
3. Xlendi Beach
On Gozo’s south coast, Xlendi Beach has soft sands that lead into shallow waters, so it’s ideal for swimming, especially with little ones. Xlendi’s colourful underwater reefs are fascinating and ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, why not explore the cliffs and caves?
4. Ramla Bay
Take a trip to Gozo to discover this beach beauty. On the north coast of the island, Ramla Bay sits at the bottom of a verdant valley. Its orange sands are the perfect place to soak up the sun or if you want adventure, head up into the dunes and explore the rocky crags. The surrounding area is relatively undeveloped apart from a handful of small cafés serving post-swim refreshments.
5. Ghajn Tuffieha
From Manikata Village, just south of Golden Bay, wander down more than 100 steps to Ghajn Tuffieha. This Blue Flag beach is known for its picturesque sea views, red-tinged sand and spectacular sunsets. Away from the high-rise hotels and budget restaurants, it’s a natural landscape that looks almost untouched.
6. San Blas
Known as Ramla Bay’s little sister, the orangey-red shoreline of San Blas can be found in the north-east of Gozo. Hidden at the end of a lush green valley, the surrounding area is filled with juicy lemon trees and cactus plants.
The steep descent can put some people off visiting, but if you’re willing to take on the walk, you’ll be rewarded with a very peaceful beach at the bottom!
7. St Peter’s Pool
Tucked away on the Dalimara Peninsula in the south of Malta, this idyllic rocky pool will make you want to grab your snorkel and dive straight in. Due to its remote location, there are no food and drinks facilities, so don’t forget to pack a picnic!
8. Mellieha Beach
Another of Malta’s Blue Flag-certified beaches, Mellieha Bay is the largest sandy beach on Malta. Come here if you’re after an all-singing, all-dancing beach resort. There’s a huge variety of water sports available, including windsurfing, water skiing, kayaking and banana boats, or if relaxing’s more your thing, there are plenty of loungers, too.
9. Gnejna Bay
Just down from the village of Mgarr on the country’s north coast, you’ll find one of the quietest but best beaches in Malta. It’s usually filled with more locals than tourists, so it’s ideal if you want a day of peace and relaxation. Sun-seekers can recline on the red sands or head up to the flat rocks for a more remote spot. The shallow waters are great for swimming, but if you want to head further out, why not hop on a pedalo and explore?
Malta’s beaches are sublime. Why not experience them for yourself on a trip to the archipelago with Jet2holidays?
