Where to stay in Malta
We’ve tried, but we simply can’t get enough of Malta. This enchanting little archipelago is an absolute must-visit for history hunters, nature fans, foodies and party animals alike, with a mix of resorts that’s as eclectic as its list of sights to see and swoon over!
So, now we know it’s an amazing holiday destination, let’s match you to your ideal Malta resort. Here goes…
Get cultural in Valletta
Between twisting wrought-iron gates and grand palace pillars lie quirky-coloured doors with even quirkier knockers (dolphin seems to be a favourite round these parts!). This caramel-colour city livens the senses and warms the heart.
Uncover the tale of the island’s knights at the Grandmaster’s Palace, where 10ft-tall paintings hang in burnished-gold frames, chaise lounges don crimson velvet and extravagant chandeliers crown every room. Be sure to see the Saluting Battery gunfire at the Upper Barrakka Gardens too and gaze high and low in tucked-away churches, where ornate ceilings will leave you spellbound. Sound like your kinda’ place? Make this unsung hero your Malta holiday base.
Turn things down a notch in Victoria
Wondering where to stay in Malta and like things a little more laidback? Go slow in Gozo’s cool capital, Victoria. Centring around a shimmering Citadel that’s straight from a fairytale, this city has a real romantic feel to it with its web of winding alleys, intricate buildings, cascading fountains and centuries-old landmarks. Getting from Gozo to Malta is simple, with a regular ferry service sailing between the two and bus routes throughout both of the islands. So, if you choose low-key Gozo as your home for your Malta holiday, you’ll still be well-connected to the surrounding resorts and the isle of Malta too.
Admire nature in San Anton
As well as being home to the official residence of Malta’s president, San Anton Palace, this gorgeous resort is also famed for its nature making it an amazing place to stay in Malta.
Marvel at the rainbow of hues in the public gardens attached to the palace. There are plants and flowers galore and some stunning sculptures and water features. Keep a look out for ducks, swans, turtles and goldfish that call the ponds their home! Occasionally, there are open-air theatre and musical performances here too.
Step back in time in Mdina
If you’re a Game of Thrones fan and you’re wondering where to stay in Malta, Mdina is a must. This fairytale town is one of the filming locations, so you can walk in the footsteps of your fave TV stars, as well as the Phoenicians and Romans all those centuries before. Pass through the famous Mdina Gate and the scene is set of what’s to come, with honey-coloured courtyards and bougainvillea-cloaked cafés.
Dine and dance in St Julian’s
Malta’s answer to party plots like Magalluf and Malia, St Julian’s shines by day and chimes by night in nearby Paceville. Start your evening in St Julian’s Bay where shorefront restaurants dish up net-fresh delights, thin-as-can-be pizzas and tangles of tagliatelle. We loved Bianco’s for its rustic-meets-modern setting, super-friendly staff and delicious bites! Then head into pumping Paceville for cool cocktail bars and buzzing clubs. This area’s the place to be if you’re here for the nightlife, and as soon as the sun sinks down the crowds spill out – even in lower seasons.
Be among it all in Sliema
Sliema’s got a whole lot to shout about. It’s come a long way since its humble fishing village roots and today the town is a hub of activity with a bustling promenade taking the starring role. There’s an air of elegance to the resort, with swish villas, glitzy cafés and stunning views over the water to Valletta. Its handy location is another one of the highlights, smack bang in the middle of buzzing St Julian’s and the island’s capital.
